Robert Draws – Eggshell Philosophy is the unique life philosophy embraced by Teguh Joko Dwiyono, an Indonesian artist who has dedicated nearly three decades of his life to creating valuable artwork from “waste.” Using eggshells and plastic waste as his primary medium, Dwiyono has not only produced intricate paintings but has also shared his knowledge by teaching others the potential hidden in household waste. Teguh Joko Dwiyono’s work with eggshells started from an in-depth exploration of their unique characteristics. Before diving into mass production of his artwork, he spent significant time researching the properties of eggshells. He discovered over 40 natural colors derived from different types of eggs, such as chicken eggs, duck eggs, and quail eggs. Despite being less than 1mm thick, eggshells turned out to be remarkably durable and capable of withstanding varying weather and environmental conditions, making them a perfect medium for his art.
This discovery led to the realization that, despite the common perception of eggshells as fragile, there is hidden strength within them. This insight became the cornerstone of Dwiyono’s life philosophy. “The eggshell may appear fragile on the outside, but it holds incredible strength inside. It teaches us that there is strength even in apparent fragility,” Dwiyono explained during a segment of the Sosok program on Detikcom.
For Dwiyono, creating art from eggshells became more than just a form of expression; it was also a journey of self-reflection and personal growth. He started seeing the symbolism of eggshells in his own life, drawing lessons from their inherent strength despite their delicate exterior. This philosophy would later help him navigate personal and professional challenges.

In 1999, Dwiyono faced a major setback in his career. At that time, he struggled to meet the demands of his international clients, failing to deliver paintings on time and receiving multiple complaints. This experience was a harsh lesson in the importance of management skills, including production, finance, and time management.
“The failure was a result of several factors, but the most significant was my lack of knowledge in management, finance, and production. It became clear that in business, you need to understand everything—marketing, finance, production,” Dwiyono said. Despite these early failures, Dwiyono’s belief in the “eggshell philosophy” kept him going. He was determined to learn and grow from his mistakes.
In the year 2000, after improving his management skills and learning the intricacies of running a business. Dwiyono made a remarkable comeback. He participated in an export product exhibition. Which opened the doors for him to receive numerous orders from countries. Like the United States, the United Kingdom, and Bahrain. With his newfound knowledge and a team of 35 employees. Dwiyono successfully fulfilled these orders, turning his artistic endeavor into a thriving business.

After more than two decades of painting and overcoming personal challenges, Dwiyono has shifted his focus to teaching and mentoring the next generation of artists. He often offers free classes, funded by the proceeds from selling his artwork. This selfless approach to teaching is rooted in his belief that true fulfillment comes from helping others. Just as the eggshell provides a form of protection and value that goes beyond its initial appearance.
Dwiyono finds great happiness in seeing his students succeed. “I find joy in giving back to the community and helping others. When I see my students succeed, it brings me far greater happiness than any monetary gain. The value of seeing them grow is beyond what money can offer,” he shared.
For Dwiyono, the eggshell is a symbol of life’s deeper meaning. The strength that lies beneath what appears fragile and the beauty that can emerge from something discarded. His story teaches that through patience, persistence, and a willingness to learn, one can overcome difficulties and find purpose in life, all while benefiting others along the way.
