Robert Draws – Sentot T. Raharjo is a name that resonates deeply within the art world, especially in the vibrant scenes of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. For over four decades, this abstract figurative artist has captivated audiences with his unique approach to painting, becoming a symbol of perseverance and creative brilliance. Since 1982, Sentot has been actively participating in numerous exhibitions across Indonesia, leaving a lasting impact with his evocative works.
At a recent exhibition, “Mbangun Svarga Rupa,” held from September 7-12, 2024, Sentot welcomed visitors with a warm smile and friendly demeanor. His white hair, a testament to his years of experience. Did little to detract from the youthful enthusiasm he exuded as he engaged with art enthusiasts and fellow creators. In his later years, Sentot continues to nurture his passion for art. It’s not just through creating but also by cultivating his personal identity through his work.
Sentot T. Raharjo’s journey into the world of fine arts began early in his life. Born on December 20, 1962, in Surabaya. Sentot was drawn to the art world while pursuing his studies in the Department of Fine Arts Education at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). Unlike many of his peers who went on to become educators, Sentot chose to pursue a career as a practicing artist.
With more than 70 group exhibitions and five solo exhibitions under his belt. Sentot has firmly established himself as a prominent figure in the Indonesian art scene. His works have even garnered international attention. With some of his sketches being sent overseas to destinations such as Finland, Australia, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom. Sentot’s ability to convey complex emotions through his abstract figurative style has earned him a devoted following both at home and abroad.
“People from other countries, like Finland and Australia, have purchased my works. They request that I send my paintings to their hometowns,” Sentot explains. Reflecting on the global reach of his art. Despite the humble packaging – sometimes using a PVC pipe to ensure safe delivery – the satisfaction of his international buyers is evident.

Sentot has long been dedicated to building his identity as an abstract figurative artist. At the “Mbangun Svarga Rupa” exhibition, Sentot took the opportunity to present his work as a means of reinforcing the personal image he has carefully cultivated over the years. As he notes, “If I exhibit often, people will get to know me. I don’t need to speak; my works speak for themselves.”
In an era dominated by digital trends and viral content, Sentot remains committed to the traditional methods of creating and presenting art. While he respects the work of younger artists who may adopt contemporary styles or trends. Sentot prefers to create art that reflects his own vision and experiences rather than chasing the latest digital phenomenon.
“I’m not in that realm. Others are welcome to follow trends, but I have my own approach, my own policy,” he remarks, showcasing his authenticity as an artist. Sentot believes that becoming a successful artist requires not only talent but also perseverance, mental fortitude, and financial acumen. He highlights that many art exhibitions come with substantial costs, and artists must be prepared for the financial investment required to showcase their work.
“To be recognized, you have to exhibit your works everywhere. If you can’t do a solo exhibition, join group shows,” Sentot advises aspiring artists. Through consistent participation in exhibitions, Sentot has managed to build a strong identity, ensuring that his name and his art are both well-known.

Despite his significant achievements, Sentot remains a humble figure among his peers. His success in the art world is not just a result of his skill but also his dedication to treating art as both a passion and a livelihood. He believes that an artist’s career, much like any other profession. Requires careful financial planning and strategy.
For Sentot, art is a business as much as it is a creative outlet. “Selling a painting is not like selling snacks that people buy every day. You need to build relationships, create a reputation, and be patient,” he shares. He reveals that, on average, he manages to sell at least one painting each month, with prices ranging from Rp 3 million to Rp 40 million. Depending on the work’s complexity and appeal.
One of Sentot’s more famous works, titled “Kuda,” was purchased by Indonesian President Joko Widodo back when he was the mayor of Solo in 2005. This recognition helped cement Sentot’s place among Indonesia’s foremost painters, demonstrating that his works are appreciated by figures of significant influence.
Sentot’s artistic philosophy is rooted in the idea of balance, both in life and in art. He advises young artists to find stability, saying, “If you have a lot of money, don’t be wasteful. If you don’t have much, don’t be too eager. Life is about finding balance.”
At the “Mbangun Svarga Rupa” exhibition, Sentot displayed his abstract painting “Lima Sempurna,” a piece that encapsulates his artistic journey and the mastery of his craft. Rather than placing a price tag on the artwork, Sentot prefers to let potential buyers reach out to him directly, underscoring his belief that art is about connection rather than transaction.
This approach not only emphasizes the personal nature of his work but also reinforces the importance of creating meaningful relationships with collectors. For many visitors, including those from Solo like Dawam, the exhibition provides an opportunity to connect with the artist and appreciate the deeper meanings embedded in each painting.
In an art world where the lines between commerce and creativity often blur. Sentot T. Raharjo stands as a reminder that true artistry transcends trends and commercial pressures. Through his dedication to his craft, he has built a lasting legacy. One that continues to inspire and challenge both fellow artists and art enthusiasts around the world.
