Robert Draws – From Canvas to Sound, what happens when local Indonesian artists paint on luxury speakers? The result is undoubtedly a unique form of art. Three Indonesian artists, Muhammad Taufiq (Emte), mural artist Tutugraf, and Sejauh Mata Memandang, have been invited by Devialet to paint on their iconic luxury speakers. These artists transformed Devialet’s renowned sound systems into exceptional works of art, offering a sensory experience that combines pure sound with their creative interpretations.
During the “Sound and Vision” exhibition held at The Resident OneFive Grand Hyatt, Emte shared that the collaboration offer from Devialet was both challenging and unexpected. They both make a concept about from canvas to sound. “I’m used to painting on paper, and suddenly I was given the opportunity to work on a material that was technically difficult. It’s a whole new experience,” he explained on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
Emte chose to incorporate symbols of various traditional Indonesian musical instruments in his painting on the speaker. His works featured earthy tones and imagery of people playing traditional Indonesian instruments. According to Emte, music has always been an integral part of his life and creative process. “I deliberately chose traditional musical instruments because, when I was a child, I learned to play the angklung and suling. I don’t mean to suggest that these instruments are outdated or irrelevant; instead, it’s important to preserve this heritage,” he said. This was especially significant as Emte had just held a solo exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, the previous month. This collab make from canvas to sound concept more perfect for them to realize.
A similar sentiment was shared by Tutugraf. A mural artist who has always been deeply connected to music throughout his life. Music has always been a constant presence for him. He believes it plays a significant role in his creative process. His work for the exhibition was titled “Mixture of Happiness.” “Since I was young, listening to music through earphones has always been a way to bring happiness. It’s one of the ways I enjoy life. For me, music completes my definition of life,” Tutugraf shared.
In his signature style, Tutugraf used distinctive lines and colors with specific tones, creating layer upon layer of detail, with motifs resembling the “mega mendung” cloud pattern. “I wanted to include mega mendung so that Indonesians would be familiar with it. It represents my imagination, and I want to bring creativity into my work in the most imaginative way possible. The clouds symbolize the audio, which, I imagine, will emanate from the speaker,” he explained.

This collaboration between Devialet and Indonesian artists is not the first of its kind. Earlier, the brand worked with Chinese artists Yang Bao and Wa Liu for a special collaboration celebrating the 2024 Chinese New Year. Freddie Beh, a representative from Devialet Indonesia, emphasized that this collaboration is a testament to the synergy between advanced technology and the dynamic creativity of Indonesian artists.
“Through the Sound & Vision exhibition, we aim to provide a meaningful and immersive experience that not only enhances the appreciation of both art and sound but also makes a tangible contribution to the local community. Devialet Indonesia is proud to support this inspiring initiative,” Beh added.
This initiative is more than just a fusion of art and technology; it is a celebration of Indonesian heritage, creativity, and the universal power of music. Through the intricate designs and cultural references embedded in their works, Emte and Tutugraf have not only created art on a speaker but have also presented a vision of Indonesian artistry in a global context.
